Can PAHO celebrate elimination of human dog mediated rabies in the Americas by 2022?

PAHO, through PANAFTOSA, has been providing technical cooperation to all countries in the region since 1983, when the Regional Program for the Elimination of Dog Transmitted Human Rabies was created. Since then Mexico has become the first country in the world to receive validation from the World Health Organization (WHO) for eliminating dog-transmitted rabies as a public health problem. 2022 is the deadline for accomplishing the self-imposed goal of the elimination of human rabies transmitted by dogs in the Americas.
